Bhartṛhari, once a king of Ujjain, renounced his throne after being disillusioned by worldly love and betrayal. In search of truth, he walked away from royal luxuries and embraced the path of renunciation. He is best known for his three collections of Sanskrit poetry — the Shatakatraya: Śṛṅgāraśataka (on love), Nītiśataka (on ethics), and Vairāgyaśataka (on renunciation). His verses reflect the deep inner churn between desire and detachment, illusion and truth. Bhartṛhari’s spiritual journey from indulgence to introspection is both relatable and transcendent. His words continue to resonate with seekers of all paths, urging them to look within, rise above illusion, and embrace the stillness of self-realization.
