Nammalvar, one of the twelve revered Alvar saints of South India, was born in Alwarthirunagari (Tamil Nadu). From birth, he showed no interest in the material world. He remained silent and motionless under a tamarind tree, deep in meditative trance, until a disciple awakened his speech to express the uncontainable love of God. His divine hymns, especially the Tiruvaymoli, are celebrated as the 'Tamil Vedas' — expressing profound longing, surrender, and devotion to Lord Vishnu. Through metaphors of love, separation, and union, Nammalvar brought the transcendent close to the heart, making Bhakti intimate and deeply emotional. His verses inspired generations of saints and devotees, and are still sung in temples across South India with reverence. He stands as a shining embodiment of divine surrender and poetic beauty.
