Tradition says Tulsidas loved his wife Ratnavali so deeply that he could not bear even a short separation. One day she left, without telling him, for her parents’ home. Restless, he set out after her that same night, through storm and flood.
To cross the swollen river in the dark, the story goes, he found something to hold onto — a corpse, which he mistook for a log. To climb the wall of her house, he grabbed what he took for a rope; it was a snake.
Ratnavali, finding her husband in this state, was stunned, and said the words that are said to have turned his life: "If you loved Ram as much as you love this body of flesh and bone, you would never fear this world again."
The story is told in several versions, and not every detail is historically confirmed. But it is remembered as the turning point after which Tulsidas left home, and turned the same love he had for his wife toward devotion to Ram.
