Very little is reliably known about Raskhan’s early life — no firm birth date, no detailed biography. Tradition says only that he was Muslim, possibly from a well-off or noble family, and that at some point a devotion to Krishna awoke in him so strongly that he left his former life behind. Some accounts connect him to Goswami Vitthalnath of the Vallabha sect, though this is not fully certain.
What is certain is his voice. In his most famous couplet, Raskhan expresses a wish: if he is born human again, let it be among the cowherds of Gokul in Braj; if an animal, let him graze among Nanda’s cows; if even a stone, let it be the stone of Govardhan, the hill Krishna lifted on one finger.
This is not an ordinary devotee’s prayer. It is the voice of someone who dissolved his own identity — name, religion, lineage, everything — into love for Krishna. Perhaps that is why Raskhan’s life history stayed dim, while his couplets remain, to this day, so clear and alive.
